Gotta say I’m thrilled with how our vacation to Old Orchard Beach, Maine turned out. Pretty amazing summer vacation spot, completely reachable from NYC via Amtrak without having to fly or rent a car.
We stayed in a motel literally just steps away from seven miles of pristine beach, ate lobster rolls and ice cream, played 25¢ skee ball every night at the amusement park, enjoyed the weekly fireworks show (which is actually pretty outstanding), explored nearby Portland, and generally lazed about for days.
Entirely possible that we were the only people in our 20s in town. That has an obvious downside — rampant childlife to be dodged at all times — but hey, we’re Park Slopers, we’re used to that. And the upside more than makes up for it: no hipsters and no, well, douchebags. I have a soft spot in my heart for the Jersey shore, but Maine is just so much more pleasant.
