“Can’t believe how strange it is to be anything at all…”—
Jeff Mangum concluded his encore at BAM last night with the title track from In The Aeroplane Over the Sea, which fittingly was the first Neutral Milk Hotel song I ever heard, way back when.
The entire set blew me away. Jeff’s intensity, and that voice — it just doesn’t seem possible that a human can project sound like that. I won’t spoil the surprises for folks seeing his last BAM set tonight, but I will say it was one of the best performances I’ve ever heard.
I used to teach an Intro to Web Fundamentals course when I lived in Cambridge. Back in 2007, one of my students was Dan Lopatin, now better known as Oneohtrix Point Never and half of Ford & Lopatin. I vaguely remember chatting with him about Brian Eno’s music.
Really nice guy, and insanely talented. Hope I gave him a good grade.
“I just noticed last week that Google Maps knew the location of my laptop computer, even though I had never told it where I was. After a bit of sleuthing, it turns out that Google probably got this information when a someone with an Android phone visited. The phone sniffed my WiFi ports, read the GPS location, and reported this back to Google location services. They did this without my knowledge, and without my permission.”—
I’m traveling to London for a couple days, and it’s my first time in town. And by pure accident, I’m arriving on Guy Fawkes Day / Bonfire Night — guess I failed to remember remember the fifth of November!
